As you age, collagen and elastin production drop. These compounds are responsible for keeping your skin looking firm and healthy while also giving it the flexibility it needs to avoid developing wrinkles and creases. As natural production decreases, you may be unsure of how to tackle the fine lines and wrinkles you begin to see.
At Meridian Medical Spa, we offer Sculptra filler treatments to help you regain a more youthful appearance. Read on to learn what Sculptra is and how it can help.
What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable biostimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid. It has a liquid consistency which easily incorporates into your body’s tissues. Unlike dermal fillers that temporarily provide the appearance of fullness, Sculptra promotes the creation of collagen.
Sculptra filler can help correct:
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Lost volume
- Folds
- Smile lines
- Sunken cheeks and temples
Other fillers provide instant results, but Sculptra offers gradual ones because it works with your body’s own natural processes to stimulate collagen.
It can also help provide fullness to other parts of the body besides the face, including the buttocks, thighs, biceps, and pectorals.
The best candidates for Sculptra are those who have a healthy immune system, are in overall good health, do not have keloid scars, and do not have a medical condition that requires them to take blood thinners.
If you have an autoimmune disorder or if you are pregnant or nursing, we will look for alternatives.
Benefits of Sculptra Filler
Sculptra fillers help restore the scaffolding of the face by helping with the creation of collagen. They add fullness to the injection areas and help treat thinning skin. We call this filler the liquid facelift because of how it can transform the contours, providing long-lasting results.
Another benefit of the Sculptra filler is that it offers natural results. People sometimes hesitate to get dermal fillers because they don’t want unnatural-looking results, but that is not a concern with Sculptra.
We offer the injections in such a way that they create a mesh-like pattern under the skin. That works as a foundation on which your own collagen can grow, ensuring the results look natural.
Sculptra also requires no downtime, letting you return to your day immediately after your appointment. It is a long-lasting option, as well. After completing the sessions, you do not have to worry about coming in for maintenance every few months. For most people, results can last up to two years.
This type of injectable also does not require an allergy test ahead of time, as other fillers might. Poly-L-lactic acid will fade naturally from your body.
Before Sculptra Treatment
When you come in for your first consultation, we will ask you about your medical history, whether you have ever used other types of fillers, and what your skincare routine is like. Let us know of any medications you take.
If you are taking blood thinners, you will need to stop for at least a week before the procedure. These medications can include aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as supplements like St. John’s Wort and fish oil. Talk with your doctor before stopping any prescription medications.
We also ask that you do not drink alcohol, especially wine, the day before the procedure. If your face has sun damage, we will have to cancel the treatment, so do avoid sun exposure in the days leading up to your appointment.
During Your Appointment
On the day of your Sculptra filler treatment, you want to avoid makeup, lotions, and any other substances you apply to your face.
We will look at the treatment areas with you once more to ensure you approve of where the filler will go, and then we will apply numbing cream if that is what you want. Sculptra fillers contain lidocaine, so you may not need the numbing cream at all.
Once we finish the injections, we will massage the area with an ointment or lotion. You will need to do this for the next few days, so we will show you how.
Sculptra Aftercare
We recommend that you follow the rule of five during aftercare – massage the treatment areas five times a day for five minutes for the length of five days. This allows the solution to distribute evenly. We will also give you an ice pack or cold compress to apply to the injection sites.
You can resume most of your regular activities right after your appointment, though you want to stay out of the sun and avoid strenuous exercise for a day or two.
You also do not want to schedule cosmetic therapies like IPL or laser for at least two weeks so that your skin can heal. You can apply makeup a few hours after the injections, however.
Some people start seeing results quickly, but creating new collagen takes time. For some, the full results take up to six months to become visible. This gradual improvement is what gives you the natural look you want.
